INTRODUCTION
ABOUT YOUR THERAPIST
Hi there! I’m Janneke Oomens, your guide and supporter on this unique journey of healing and recovery.
Growing up with parents in healthcare, I always felt a natural pull towards this field. It’s like I was destined to be in a profession, where caring for others was at the heart of every day. Physiotherapy became my chosen path – a field where the incredible resilience and capacity of the human body are front and center.
“My personal connection to healthcare took a deeper, more poignant turn early in life. Losing my mother to melanoma when I was just 15, and years later, my father-in-law to esophageal cancer, brought a profound understanding of the impact of this illness. These experiences not only shaped my view of life and health but also steered my professional direction.”
In the early years of my career, I often worked with breast cancer patients because of my lymphedema specialization. Seeing their struggles, which went beyond physical symptoms, struck a chord with me. It wasn’t enough for me to be treating only a part of their journey; it was about being a part of their entire recovery process. This realization sparked my dedication to oncology physiotherapy. It felt like a field where I could offer holistic care, where every aspect of a patient’s well-being was acknowledged and nurtured. I decided to pursue my master’s degree in oncology physiotherapy.
“My approach in therapy, has always been about more than just physical recovery. It’s about understanding each person’s unique story and creating a space where they feel heard and supported. I believe in starting with finding one’s energy balance, before addressing physical symptoms or diving into exercise regimes. It’s a method that resonates with many who are navigating the complexities of life after cancer.”
Back when I just started my Oncology Physiotherapy practice in The Netherlands. A family friend recovering from breast cancer, called me asking for some guidance. She was doing ok, but struggling with fatigue. She was dreading to go into yet another care process, with an oncology physical therapist like me and having to make appointments two or three times a week. She just wanted to know what she could do, so she could recover on her own terms in her own time. So, I put some basic advice and some tips in writing and send it to her. She was very thankful and started to do better.
A couple of months later, I got a message from someone I didn’t know, about the document I send her. It turns out she took my draft and gave it to a lot of fellow survivors she knew, were struggling with the same thing. Unknowingly I put this info out there, Which people were actually using, so I decided to follow up with the people I could track down. They were all super grateful and I got a lot of feedback on things I could add to the guide, like it was something i was developing. I wasn’t, but it got me thinking that maybe it could be a way to help many more survivors, who weren’t going to seek a therapist but would greatly benefit from some guidance.
That’s how my online platform was born.
I decided to put in the work, and create something that would allow me to help many more people. Not only those who came to my practice.
If you allow yourself to focus on your recovery, put in the work, and do all the assignments and exercises, however trivial they may seem. I’m confident you’ll be a lot less fatigued, regain a sense of control, find out where your new boundaries are and overall feel better, because you can once again do the things you want to do.
Creating the ‘Balance After Cancer’ course was a natural progression in my quest to reach and help more people. It’s more than just a program; it’s a community, a safe space for learning, sharing, and growing. Let’s embark on this path to balance, health, and happiness together.
